Finally getting around to Better Call Saul and… ah, yep.
Without spoilers: there’s a short sequence in the season I’m currently watching which follows a person finding an unknown device, testing it, determining its purpose, and then repurposing the device—simultaneously resolving and opening up plotlines; developing character—all done not just without any explanatory dialogue, but without any dialogue whatsoever, and it is both clear and cinematic.
(You all already knew, of course)
If I was ever kidnapped (by street toughs) and forced to construct my own ‘Darmok and Jalad’-style allegorical language, ‘KT Tunstall On Jools That One Time’ would probably be a lynchpin.
Woke up to hail, falling directly down onto the roof on a windless day, sounding like the house was wandering aound somewhere underwater. Now settled into the silence of an actual snow.
I bought a Switch 2 in the middle of 2025 (my previous games console was, and I keep having to double-check this, the original NES), and finally picked up No Man’s Sky, a mere decade after it launched, looking for a chill space-themed exploration sandbox.
Every time I dip into this thing it accidentally generates cover art for never-written sci-fi novels that teenage me would have devoured.
Must try to dust-off the writing pen in the new year.
Al Leong is, of course, the real hero here.
The Die Hards (of which they sadly only ever made two) are now playing, it’s officially Christmas Eve.
Now I Have A Machine Gun, everyone. Feet Smaller Than My Sister, to you and yours.
Old graffiti, fresh fast food wrappers, a single lost glove.
Getting the train home from a stop I haven’t used since I worked nearby years ago.The odd interaction between the ghost of a place and its literal decay.
It’s only noon and I’ve almost eaten an entire 200g Lindt chocolate teddy. Tis the season!
Unexpectedly, my first seasonal earworm is the stone cold classic Dylan cover of Must Be Santa.
Ahh, and they’ve started. Those little pre-shocks of squee realising that this is the last week of work for the year.
Blue bin just tried a runner to the neighbours’ house. A firm disciplinary stance was taken.
Opening Mastodon for the first time in a couple of days specifically for the bin chat scene. Stormy weather isn’t the same without updates.
So while my yellows were mainly just reds, it turns out my reds need a suspicious amount of yellow and blue.
My genuine colourblindness cannot possibly be at fault.
Interesting start to the day: waking from an unremembered dream muttering ‘there is no history’ to myself.
Reminded today of the sheer power of the expression, ‘he’d give you the shits’. An old favourite of my mum’s. You don’t need it often, but it’s a fine one to have in your pocket.
Forget the Die-Hard-is-a-Christmas-movie thing, I’m starting the season with the original Ghostbusters(es) and will hear no complaints.
I was the clever person, the wise person, and also the fool who spent hours on it.
Just had a perfect illustration of the clever/wise distinction in the Day Job.
The clever approach was all nice techniques to manage a bunch of unrelated moving parts in a large codebase. Did the job well.
The wise approach was to realise that all of the code being modified could just be binned and have the same effect.
With a very similar vibe—but with commentary!—to those Slow TV style train journeys, the Travelling Turtle is perfect dark-autumn-evening chill viewing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=RDPy0xm3b5K9VtCG&v=qSQapm0UyWU&feature=youtu.be
