Well, chalk that one up to experience. I’d finally picked up the paints again after months only to ‘ruin’ (slightly mar, to the point of minor but strongly-held annoyance) a mini while experimenting with masking fluid.
It’s barely visible in the image but there are small patches where it’s either inaccessible to get at and peel, or where it’s adhered in a crevice and stuck. I don’t want overpaint or I’m sure it’ll flake off at an inconvenient time later.
It’s nice to have an entirely non-critical little dev project to play with again. This was a bit of fun to potter about with on a sunny Saturday in the garden–pulling my image posts from Mastodon into a single small gallery and badging them according to how they were tagged. No JS required, all static.
I’ve seen a few different people recently re-start personal blogs and it made me want to tinker with static site tools again… I’ve also been wondering how many little painting projects I’ve started and just left half-done here on Mastodon (11. The answer is currently 11).
So… still very much a WIP (another, add it to the count), but technically this works, syncing up Mastodon toots and stats as purely static content:
A little bit of a clean-up on the blade, and a first attempt at the dreaded eye lenses. At the most, absolute maximum, only 80% cross-eyed?
It has been weeks since I did any actual painting. I’m really not sure this effect on the pointy bit’s working, or even in keeping with the rest of the model, but it is ultimately more acrylic-on-plastic so I’m calling it a win!
Starting to add some secondary colours now that Tyrion-paralysis has ended.
I always intended to go back to this one and do a finishing pass or two before submitting to the competition on MMF, but the thought of doing so put me off any hobbying at all for several days 😅. So I’m calling this guy done. This will be the hero shot. Also the first mini photo I’ve ever removed the ‘WIP’ tag from.

Head, shoulder, knee and toes (knee and toes). It may be a royal pain trying to colour-match freehand mistakes on a stippled shoulder gradient, but here we are. It’s all just a mix of the same two paints. How bad could it get 😬

I appear to be locked into an Accidental Grimdark with this one.
Random midweek experiments: I wondered if I’d be able to get a smooth blend from quite dark to quite bright going brown-to-ivories, without resorting to an airbrush. I think the answer is definitely ’no’, at least with this approach. It gives its own effect though, the scratchiness of it could probably be read as weathering? I’ll have to give stippling a try.

Let’s just take this panel by panel I suppose. Mess about with the Big Guy until something starts to look vaguely appropriate, then try to mimic it on his little friend.
NMM gold experimentation as the next random diversion I think. Definitely going to be handy to have a Truly Enormous version without any fussy small details to work things out on.
What do we reckon here, HobbyPals? Is the freehanding actually accomplishing anything, or just distracting from the initial pleasant simplicity?

It’s not the tidiest highlighting job in the world, but I’m slightly irritated that this very quick two-tone ‘tester’ model is already looking nicer than the stuff I spend weeks on…
